Hamish Fulton Group Walk

Hamish Fulton
Shore – Line. A Slow Walk Facing the Sea

Public group walk, Saturday 2nd July 2011 at the former Rotunda Amusement Park, Marine Parade, Folkestone, CT20 IPX
The event starts at 12:00noon and will last an hour. Please arrive on site at exactly 11:30am for instructions.

‘Walking is an art form in its own right, it does not have to be a lesser form of land art.’
Hamish Fulton

Fulton has devised and will lead a group walk on the site of what was Folkestone Rotunda Amusement Park, a now deserted expanse of land leading to the pebble beach.
Walkers will stand side by side facing the sea and be asked to make a 4.5-metre walk last exactly an hour. The entire walk will be made in silence.

Fulton explains, ‘This communal walk is neither sculptural nor a performance. The walking participant is both the art and viewer. On completion of the walk the Rotunda site will return to being an empty public space.’

Since the 60s Hamish Fulton has made images and texts pieces in response to his direct physical engagement with both rural and urban landscapes. In 1973 he resolved to only make art resulting from individual walks. Fulton began devising group walks in the early 90s and has made over 30 of these all over the world from Japan, to Norway, to USA. Most recently Fulton created walks for Margate’s Turner Contemporary.
